How much canned food should I feed my 17-pound cat on a diet, and what should the target weight be?

the canned food may be the problem though. i know you said thats all you feed but my cat used to be 20 pounds (note that my cat is inccredibly large as in length and height), try feeding him a 1 and a half cups of food per day.
