How do I get started on buying/selling stocks?

Okay, I've always wanted to try making some money out of stocks. I'm 14 yrs old. My parents gave me $1000 to use on stocks because they think I've earned it and they want to see how I will do too. My dad gave me a book that has a lot of information on stocks and I've just started reading it. I don't know how to get started. I've heard about MorningStar, but I'm not sure if I can use that for buying/selling stocks. My dad told me that most banks have a site for stocks. Can you guys give me some tips on how to get started? What kind of stocks are better to invest in long-term or what is better for speculating? Thanks!
