How should I break off my relationship with a person?

My boyfriend and I have been together for one month shy of a year. He just informed me that he is FtM. While I have nothing against the trans community, I wouldn't want to knowingly date one. Either way I know breaking it off with him will hurt him, but I can't continue on as if he were a bio male. How should I go about terminating this relationship?
